How to use digital to transform internal communication

Rethink how employees communicate with their organization

As a large international retail chain with 700 stores across Europe, HEMA wanted to rethink internal communications for all employees.
HEMA wanted to improve internal communication and HR self-service. Their goal: to strengthen relations with employees and reshape the company’s information sharing culture by bringing internal communication tools to life digitally.
We conceived and built a digital platform to house internal HEMA information, accessible on any device by both current and former employees.

Give internal communication a digital facelift

While the employee magazine has long been the way for HEMA to stay connected with employees, they wanted to find a faster way to allow employees to access HR and internal communications. We realized that providing a self-servicing, user-friendly portal would not only improve communication and productivity, but also save on printing, distribution and administration costs.

Beneath the users: employees
and HEMA administrators

We began by getting to know the user: the employees. To best identify, understand and define their needs, we organized a number of workshops with various stakeholders. Our team collaborated with the Corporate Communications Department, HR and employees to give us a complete perspective on various users’ needs.

This user research guided us in creating the concept for the product. Once we had a vision, we chose an iterative approach to build it quickly and efficiently. This approach consisted of continuous and fast development, visualization and feedback from the end users during the conception phase.
